How Hammerstone gave three AUKUS armies a Common Logistics Operating Picture

At Project Convergence Capstone 5 (PC-C5) in March 2025, Hammerstone deployed its Digitalised Joint Modular Intermodal Logistics System (D-JMILS) and ReadyFleet™ software to provide a Logistics Common Operating Picture (LogCOP) for Australian, US and UK armies.1The system delivered real-time In-Transit Visibility (ITV) of stores and ammunition across coalition forces, integrated with Systematic’s SitaWare Battle Management System, and operated under Disconnected, Degraded, Intermittent and Low-bandwidth (DDIL) conditions – the same contested environment that defeats most commercial logistics platforms.1,4

What was Project Convergence Capstone 5?

Project Convergence is a United States-led campaign of learning through persistent experimentation, designed to test, refine and accelerate the integration of next-generation military technologies 2. Capstone 5 (PC-C5) was conducted at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California in March and April 2025, and brought together approximately 140 Australian Army personnel alongside military forces from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and France, testing advanced technology across all warfighting domains in realistic, large-scale combat scenarios 2,3.

The exercise was not a rehearsal, it was an experiment. Designed to stress-test emerging capabilities under conditions that mirror the demands of future conflict. As Head of Land Capability Major General Richard Vagg described it: a key pillar of modernisation efforts, giving the opportunity to experiment with emerging technology nested with Australian modernisation plans, while integrating with key coalition partners 3. Among the technologies on trial was Hammerstone’s logistics digitalisation capability, put through its paces in a multinational, multi-domain operational environment.

What was the logistics problem PC-C5 was trying to solve?

Modern coalition operations generate a logistics challenge that manual systems cannot resolve. When Australian, US and UK forces operate together, their supplies – ammunition, fuel, food, equipment – move across national boundaries, through multiple vehicle types, in containers belonging to different nations, driven by personnel from different armies.

The complexity of this at PC-C5 was vivid. As Captain Shane Allen of 17th Sustainment Brigade described it, one scenario involved a Nepalese driver in a UK vehicle, with an Australian CROP (container rolling off platform system) inside a French ISO 20-foot container 3. For theatre logistics managers, tracking that asset in real time, knowing where it was, what was in it, and which coalition partner needed it, was exactly the kind of problem that traditional logistics reporting cannot keep pace with.

The operational need was clear: a single logistics picture, shared across coalition partners, updated continuously, and functional in environments where communications are unreliable or actively degraded.

What was the foundation for this capability?

The integration demonstrated at PC-C5 did not emerge overnight. It was built on a preceding Proof of Concept (PoC) conducted between November 2023 and December 2024 under Australia’s Land Capability Information Management System (LCIMS) program.

Hammerstone was contracted by the Australian Army to design and deliver the LCIMS PoC – developing ReadyFleet™ as the data fusion and analytics backbone, and working directly with Systematic to integrate it with SitaWare.4 The PoC focused on asset monitoring and tracking, collecting data from a range of edge sources including the M113 armoured personnel carrier and existing in-transit visibility systems, and surfacing that data to commanders through the SitaWare C2 environment.4

The result was a proven integration architecture, tested, refined and ready for the demands of a live coalition experimentation event. When PC-C5 came, Hammerstone and Systematic arrived with a system that had already been put through its paces.

D-JMILS: Digitalised Joint Modular Intermodal Logistics System

D-JMILS uses electronic asset tags to identify and track platforms and payloads as they move through the logistics chain. At PC-C5, the system tracked stores and ammunition across coalition assets, providing automated identification and in-transit visibility that followed the asset regardless of which nation owned it, who was moving it, or what container it was travelling in.1,3

The tags and readers used in D-JMILS are designed specifically for metallic and containerised environments where standard RFID systems fail, and are intrinsically safe for use near explosives and fuel – a critical requirement for military logistics.4

ReadyFleet™

ReadyFleet™ is Hammerstone’s digital logistics and sustainment platform, a data fusion and analytics system that manages and brokers information across logistics information systems. It connects edge computing systems with deployed ICT infrastructure and strategic cloud services, and is built to integrate with both Land Domain Battle Management Systems (BMS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software such as SAP.4

At PC-C5, ReadyFleet™ aggregated the data generated by D-JMILS into a Logistics Common Operating Picture, making the real-time status of stores, equipment and supplies visible to logistics managers across all three AUKUS partner armies simultaneously.1

The SitaWare integration was a specific and significant technical achievement. Because the Australian Army uses Systematic’s SitaWare C4ISR software suite as its interim Battle Management System, ReadyFleet™ was built to share real-time equipment status – including vehicle Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) data, directly into SitaWare through a notional Cross Domain Solution, delivering priority alert information and fleet condition status to commanders, logistics managers and operations staff at the tactical C2 level, through SitaWare Edge, Frontline and Headquarters.4

The integrated system operated across both commercial bearers and tactical communications network radios, and was engineered to function in DDIL environments – the low-connectivity, disrupted conditions that define contested operations and that most commercial logistics platforms are not designed to handle.1,4

The ReadyFleet™ and D-JMILS combination delivered three core functions for theatre logistics managers at PC-C5:

Logistics Common Operating Picture (LogCOP)

A shared, real-time view of logistics status – stores, ammunition, equipment etc, visible across Australian, US and UK forces simultaneously. This was not a single-nation picture exported to partners; it was a genuinely shared operating picture across coalition systems.4

In-Transit Visibility (ITV) of Stores and Ammunition

Continuous tracking of assets as they moved through the supply chain. Class I (food and water), Class III (fuel) and Class V (ammunition), giving logistics managers and commanders the ability to see where critical supplies were at any point in the distribution chain.1

Control Tower Functionality

Theatre logistics managers could see the full picture of demand and supply across coalition partners, enabling them to identify shortfalls, redirect resources across national boundaries and make resupply decisions in a shorter timeframe than traditional reporting allows.1

As Captain Shane Allen of 17th Sustainment Brigade described it, the system enabled partner nations to identify and demand resources within neighbouring forces rather than waiting for their own supply chains to catch up, creating a shorter timeline of resupply that is beneficial for the entire mission and coalition.3

Why does DDIL performance matter?

The conditions at PC-C5 were not ideal. That was the point.

Disconnected, Degraded, Intermittent and Low-bandwidth (DDIL) describes the communications environment that defence forces increasingly expect to operate in during contested operations. When communications infrastructure is unreliable, whether through geography, distance, enemy action or congestion, systems that depend on persistent connectivity fail. Logistics managers lose visibility. Commanders make decisions without a clear picture. Resupply is delayed.

ReadyFleet™ and D-JMILS are designed for exactly these conditions. The system maintained functionality across commercial bearers and tactical radio networks, switching between them as availability allowed, and was engineered to continue operating in degraded states rather than simply going offline.1,4

As Matt Hanlon, General Manager at Hammerstone, described the LCIMS PoC that underpinned the PC-C5 deployment: the system provides a comprehensive deployed logistics management system that operates in DDIL environments, improving situational awareness and decision support from tactical to strategic levels.4

For defence customers evaluating logistics digitalisation, DDIL performance is not a feature. It is a threshold requirement. PC-C5 demonstrated that Hammerstone meets it.

Hammerstone’s Partners

Hammerstone did not deliver this capability alone. The result at PC-C5 was the product of a deliberate technology partnership between Hammerstone and Systematic, one that had been built and tested through the LCIMS PoC before being deployed into the field.4

Systematic — SitaWare

Systematic is the developer of SitaWare, the C4ISR software suite used by the Australian Army as its interim Battle Management System, and used by US and UK forces across coalition operations.4 The ReadyFleet™/SitaWare integration was a direct technical collaboration between the engineering teams of both companies.

Mark Gainsford, Vice President for Business Development at Systematic Australia, described the collaboration as demonstrating the power of existing commercial software and the enhancements that come from collaborative efforts, with the joint work between the Systematic and Hammerstone software teams optimising the integration between the two systems and creating a powerful demonstration of interoperable C2 and logistics systems.4

Edward Rossiter, Solution Engineer at Systematic Australia, noted that the development work to integrate SitaWare with Hammerstone’s logistics environment was inherently very easy, underscoring how SitaWare’s architecture is designed for exactly this kind of third-party interoperability. He framed the outcome directly: enhancing SitaWare’s ability to support interoperability across systems and add capability to the war fighter.4

The partnership extends beyond a single project. Systematic and Hammerstone have committed to deepening the ReadyFleet™/SitaWare integration as an ongoing program of work, enhancing logistics situational awareness for users across the multi-domain battlespace.4

SAP

SAP’s enterprise logistics capabilities underpin Hammerstone’s broader data architecture, ensuring that logistics data generated at the tactical edge connects coherently with enterprise systems, from theatre logistics management through to the national support base.1

The AUKUS partnership

The trilateral AUKUS security agreement between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States provided the operational framework within which this coalition logistics capability was demonstrated. The US and UK are both SitaWare users, which made the ReadyFleet™/SitaWare integration directly relevant to coalition interoperability, not just Australian national capability.4

What does this prove about Sense & Respond Logistics?

PC-C5 was not a controlled laboratory demonstration. It was an operational experimentation event – forces in the field, under realistic conditions, alongside coalition partners whose systems, procedures and languages differ from Australia’s own.2,3

For Hammerstone General Manager Matt Hanlon, the objective was always straightforward: give C2 commanders more information to make informed decisions in the tactical environment.4 PC-C5 demonstrated that ReadyFleet™ and D-JMILS deliver exactly that; a comprehensive deployed logistics management system that operates in DDIL environments, improving situational awareness and decision support from tactical to strategic levels.4
